The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB Test, is more commonly used. You must succeed on this demanding exam if you're interested in a career in the military. All military branches, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, and Coast Guard, use it. It is also used to evaluate your skills in particular areas that might be important to your military job assignments.
Studying hard and taking lots of practice ASVAB tests are the best ways to get ready for this test. An Army ASVAB practice test is exactly the same as a Navy ASVAB practice test because the exam is the same for all branches. The portions of the exam that count towards the Armed Services Qualifications Test, or AFQT, are the most crucial. Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Math Knowledge make up these sections.
The jargon and acronyms used on the ASVAB are one thing that may be crucial to learn. For instance, your MOS in the Army and Marine Corps, your Rate in the Navy, or your AFSC in the Air Force will depend on your ASVAB score. Here is a quick reference guide:
To comprehend standard deviations, one must first understand the ASVAB score range. The ASVAB has a maximum score of 99 and a minimum score of 1. The mean of every test taker is used to calculate scores. This means that a score of 50 would be considered to be average. One standard deviation from the mean score is represented by each increment of 10. In other words, a score of 80, for instance, would be three standard deviations better than the mean score, while a score of 30, on the other hand, would be two standard deviations lower.
Your knowledge and skill in ten different areas are assessed by the ASVAB. Although the ASVAB is not an IQ test, it does assist the military's various branches in determining which positions you are most qualified to fill. The Armed Forces Qualification Test, or AFQT, is a component of the ASVAB that calculates your AFQT Score.

The AFQT is the basic skill assessment and consists of:
These questions are specifically used to assess a test taker's readiness for military service. Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge are closely related and heavily weighted in any technical jobs in each branch.
A minimum score is required for entry into each branch of the service. Your chances of getting the position you want and of enlisting in your preferred branch increase with your score. For entry into each branch with a high school diploma, the required AFQT scores are as follows:
Air Force |
36 |
Army & National Guard |
31 |
Coast Guard |
40 |
Marine Corps |
32 |
Navy |
35 |
Without a high school diploma and holding a GED only you’ll need the following scores |

When first learning about the ASVAB test, many people see the term "CAT" attached to it and wonder what it refers to. Computerized Adaptive Test is the abbreviation for this term. The ASVAB test is available in three versions. For soldiers enlisting, the CAT is accessible at military processing stations. For high school and college students who may not actually enlist, there is a pencil and paper (also known as P&P or S-ASVAB) version of the test. The MET-ASVAB, or Mobile Examination Test, is the third type of ASVAB test and is only offered to enlisted soldiers at mobile testing facilities (this test is also done with paper and pencil).
The CAT-ASVAB is an adaptive test, which means it adjusts to the test-skill taker's level. Compared to the pencil and paper test, it is possible to administer a shorter test this way. You don't need to wait for an administrator to let you move on to the next section of the test once you finish one subsection. The computerized ASVAB is still timed, and it takes an average of 1 and a half hours to complete.
