The ASTB (Aviation Selection Test Battery) is the main exam used by the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps to choose applicants for their respective officer aviation program. The ASTB has undergone numerous technical updates in recent years.
Parts of the ASTB-E are used by the US Coast Guard to choose candidates for its non-aviation officer commissioning program and pilots for training.
Seven subtests make up the multiple-choice computer-adaptive ASTB-E exam. These subtests assess skills that are necessary for success in officer training and careers involving aviation. Based on prior responses, the questions on the first five subtests adjust to the candidate's skill level.
Learners have the option of taking either the entire battery, which consists of seven subtests, or just the Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR) section, which consists of three subtests. Participants only need to complete the OAR section if they are not interested in a career in aviation. It will take between 1 and 2.5 hours to complete the OAR portion, and 2 to 3 hours to complete the battery.

Any of the following locations can be selected for exam registrations:
1. The closest naval officer recruitment office
2. A significant university's Navy ROTC programme
3. Office for the Selection of Marine Officers
4. A military academy
The primary way to take the exam is on a computer, and there is no fee.
The OAR component can also be completed as a paper exam. The Navy or Marine Corps personnel in charge of scheduling the exam will need to be consulted regarding the delivery method. Given that both delivery strategies have produced comparable results, neither is more beneficial for test-takers.
You will need to show a state-issued ID and proof of your social security number when you arrive for your scheduled test appointment. Nothing else may be brought into the testing facility; all materials required for the exam will be made available to you.
Students who complete only the OAR section of the exam will only receive one score, while those who finish the entire exam will receive four composite scores. Different programmes and services have different score requirements:

Required Score |
Officer Candidate School |
OAR |
Student Naval Officer |
AQR + PFAR |
Student Naval Flight Officer |
AQR + FOFAR |
The stanine scale is used to calculate the composite scores, which range from 1 to 9. Based on how you performed in relation to other test-takers, you are given a percentile score. Therefore, if you score 5, you did better than between 40 and 60 percent of other test-takers.

You have up to two chances to retake the exam if you don't pass it the first time, but there must be at least 31 days between each attempt. Since there is a lifetime limit, you should do as much planning as you can before making your first attempt. Even if it is not your highest score, only your most recent score will be taken into account.
As soon as you finish all seven subtests, you will immediately receive a report of your results. Because the exam is computer-adaptive, each person will require a different number of questions to pass.

Aspiring pilots and flight officers for the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guards can take this test and must pass to start aviation training.
ASTB Test Prep includes 7 different subtests.
No. Those who have worked in aviation or on ships can use their experience to perform well on the exam. It is not necessary, though. You can improve your test results by using an ASTB study guide and practise exams from Henry Harvin.
There are three additional scoring categories in addition to the Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR): the Academic Qualifications Rating (AQR), the Pilot Flight Aptitude Rating (PFAR), and the Flight Officer Aptitude Rating (FOFAR). The scores for these three categories range from 0 to 9.
The ASTB-E is available up to three times. Before taking the ASTB-E a third and final time, there must be a minimum 30-day wait before the first attempt.
Some subtests can be taken online or on paper, while other sections of the ASTB are available online only.
The ASTB-E is an online exam. But the OAR portion of the ASTB-E test can be attempted either on paper or online. However, you need to discuss your choice with Navy or Marine Corps personnel scheduling the exam.
Yes, aviation candidates need to appear for the OAR exam as well. In fact, the candidates applying for the aviation programs should appear for the entire ASTB-E test.
The Aviation Selection Test Battery is composed of seven subsets. Three subsets, which include math skills, reading and mechanical comprehension comprise the OAR test. The other four include Biographic Inventory, Aviation and Nautical information, and Naval Aviation Traits.
The individuals appearing for the entire ASTB-E exam will receive four composite scores ranging from 1-9, 9 being the highest score. The minimum passing composite score for each program is Four or Five. However, higher scores are preferred.
