About the ASTB Test Prep Course

What is ASTB Test?

The ASTB (Aviation Selection Test Battery) is the main exam used by the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps to choose applicants for their respective officer aviation program. The ASTB has undergone numerous technical updates in recent years.

Parts of the ASTB-E are used by the US Coast Guard to choose candidates for its non-aviation officer commissioning program and pilots for training.

Test Pattern

Seven subtests make up the multiple-choice computer-adaptive ASTB-E exam. These subtests assess skills that are necessary for success in officer training and careers involving aviation. Based on prior responses, the questions on the first five subtests adjust to the candidate's skill level.

Learners have the option of taking either the entire battery, which consists of seven subtests, or just the Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR) section, which consists of three subtests. Participants only need to complete the OAR section if they are not interested in a career in aviation. It will take between 1 and 2.5 hours to complete the OAR portion, and 2 to 3 hours to complete the battery.

Biographical Inventory with Response Validation (BI-RV)

How Do I Sign Up For The Test?

Any of the following locations can be selected for exam registrations:

1. The closest naval officer recruitment office

2. A significant university's Navy ROTC programme

3. Office for the Selection of Marine Officers

4. A military academy

The primary way to take the exam is on a computer, and there is no fee.

The OAR component can also be completed as a paper exam. The Navy or Marine Corps personnel in charge of scheduling the exam will need to be consulted regarding the delivery method. Given that both delivery strategies have produced comparable results, neither is more beneficial for test-takers.

The Test Day

You will need to show a state-issued ID and proof of your social security number when you arrive for your scheduled test appointment. Nothing else may be brought into the testing facility; all materials required for the exam will be made available to you.

Scores & Results

Students who complete only the OAR section of the exam will only receive one score, while those who finish the entire exam will receive four composite scores. Different programmes and services have different score requirements:

  • OAR: Officer Aptitude Rating
  • AQR: Academic Qualifications Rating
  • PFAR: Pilot Flight Aptitude Rating
  • FOFAR: Flight Officer Aptitude Rating

The stanine scale is used to calculate the composite scores, which range from 1 to 9. Based on how you performed in relation to other test-takers, you are given a percentile score. Therefore, if you score 5, you did better than between 40 and 60 percent of other test-takers.

You have up to two chances to retake the exam if you don't pass it the first time, but there must be at least 31 days between each attempt. Since there is a lifetime limit, you should do as much planning as you can before making your first attempt. Even if it is not your highest score, only your most recent score will be taken into account.

As soon as you finish all seven subtests, you will immediately receive a report of your results. Because the exam is computer-adaptive, each person will require a different number of questions to pass.

ASTB Test Prep Course Curriculum

  • Section 1: MST (Math Skills Test)

This includes elementary probability questions as well as some simple word problems involving time and distance. Also contain some basic geometry, algebra, angles, and perimeter.

  • Section 2: RCT (Reading Comprehension Test)

This section tests the ability to read and comprehend passages. Identifying the passage's main idea or determining whether it supports a particular claim will frequently be asked of learners.

  • Section 3: MCT (Mechanical Comprehension Test)

Understanding of fundamental physics and mechanics principles will be evaluated by this subtest. Gasses and liquids, pressure, volume, velocity, engine parts and performance, electrical principles, gears, weight distribution, and the operation of simple machines were some of the subjects covered.

  • Section 4: ANIT (Aviation and Nautical Information Test)

This section will make learners familiar with some nautical jargon, some aviation history, as well as some basic aviation concepts like aerodynamics, fundamental aircraft parts, and flight regulations in order to pass this section of the ASTB.

  • Section 5: NATFI (Naval Aviation Trait Facet Inventory)

It is a personality inventory that will ultimately determine a person's suitability for an aviation career based on their individual traits.

  • Section 6: PBM (Performance Based Measures)

Situational awareness, dexterity, aptitude for spatial orientation, and multitasking are all measured by this subtest. After receiving a problem requiring the identification of cardinal directions, the user will track an airplane on a screen using a joystick and throttle (flight simulation). Prepare for this section by working out problems involving mental rotation.

  • Section 7: BI-RV (Biographical Inventory With Response Validation)

This subtest's objective is to assess the capacity for completing naval training by learning more about the background and experiences of the participants. There are 110 questions on it, and it must be finished at home.
