I am a novice Six Sigma Professional in an organization. There is no scope for me to grow here. If I get a higher belt certification, what all companies have room to absorb me?
Above questions are often creating some noise in the minds of Six Sigma Professionals. Such questions are obvious to come to your mind, as you have invested a significant amount of money and valuable time to earn the certification. Before we look for companies that employ Six Sigma certified professionals, let us have a look at how six sigma fits into their organizational structure.
We divide six Sigma Professionals into Champions, Master Black Belt, Black Belt, Green Belts, Yellow belts and White belts. Each of these category professionals serve a different purpose in an organisation. Let us have a closer look at them.
Six Sigma Champion
A Six Sigma Champion in an organization is responsible for the mission propagation, sharing the vision and adding values in the six sigma deployment across the organisation that will help achieve the greater goal of the company. They are often the link between the higher organizational managers and the black belt in the project team. They are the enablers for project teams at a higher level who iron out any hurdles arising on the path to achieve a better process for the project.
Six Sigma Master Black Belt
A Six Sigma master black belt is one level lower than the Six Sigma Champion. A master black belt guides black belts of project teams. A black belt is like a protege of a master black belt. She helps the black belt with the implementation of Six Sigma in their respective projects. She regularly coaches, trains, and propagates Six Sigma concepts and techniques to the practicing six sigma professionals. A Six Sigma Master Black Belt Certification has additional responsibilities of preparing, maintaining, and progressively revising the six sigma curriculum for the teams.
A Master Black Belt also helps in preparing metrics and deploying metrics for a particular organization. She also continuously networks with fellow master black belts to understand best practices followed in other companies so we can adopt them with some or no changes depending on our company’s structure and operational profile. Companies that look for Master Black Belt, need some years of experience already with the candidate so they can easily bring their company to speed in adopting six sigma processes.
Six Sigma Black Belt
Six Sigma Black Belt Course professionals are actual boots on the ground who implement the six sigma concepts, techniques and strategies in their team to achieve the desired quality. This is the 1st level of leadership position that handles a team in its six sigma implementation endeavour. Grooming the next level of six sigma professionals like Green Belts, Yellow belts and White belts to learn and practise Six Sigma is one of the major goals of a Black Belt. A Black belt drives and rolls out the six sigma strategy for a project. Black belts and above are often important resources who are shared across multiple projects because of their expertise. They are also record keepers of the team’s progress.
Six Sigma Green Belt
Six Sigma Green Belt Course belt professionals are the ones who are involved directly in the six sigma project implementation. They work directly with a black belt certified six sigma professional while analyzing and solving quality problems. They help to coordinate data collection efforts and validate the set metrics for measurement of process quality. Green belts are allocated to a functional area in which they operate. Thus it is safe to say, they are important participants of a six sigma project but without the responsibility of leading a team.
Six Sigma Yellow Belt
Six Sigma Yellow belt professionals are general members of a project team. They normally help in the measurement and metrics in the Measure stage of a six sigma rollout. We consider them as absolute starter professionals in six sigma implementation journeys. Mostly they aid higher belt certified professionals. Yellow belt certification ensures that a basic level of understanding of six sigma is present with the professional and will be a catalyst in the six sigma rollout instead of being a hurdle or a slow learner.
Six Sigma White Belt
Six Sigma White Belt professionals are normally the general employees of an organisation. We usually conduct white belt training in organisations at business unit level to make the wider population know the basic idea about Six Sigma. Usually such training can be completed in a few hours’ time. This certification may not have as much value as higher level certifications. However, it is a critical need where the employment pre-condition for an organization demands the applying candidate has some understanding of Six Sigma concepts. There are many online portals that help one get the basics fast and free too.
So where can we apply our Six Sigma Skills?
Although initially Six Sigma was birthed to improve quality in the manufacturing domain, it was later adapted to support a multitude of business processes. With time it evolved to support industries like hospitality, Medicine, Aviation, Services, Finance, Engineering, Construction, and Supply Chain Management. Many multinational companies have adopted Six Sigma, in addition, to lean to improve the speed of delivery all the while adhering to the highest possible quality for their offerings. This has opened a significant job market for certified lean professionals.
