“Thanks to the outsourcing rush and rise of the digital market, there is no dearth of jobs for technical writers in India. With opportunities pouring in from every sector including engineering, health, manufacturing, telecom, etc., technical writers earn a decent salary in India.”
-Bharti Gupta, H.R. Manager
The salary of technical writers depends on their skills and the organization they choose. Several other factors that influence the technical writer salary are as follows:
1. Qualification and Training
Employers usually look for technical writers with a bachelor’s degree in a technical field such as computer science or engineering. In addition, a degree in Mass Communications, English Literature, or Print Journalism improves chances of landing a technical writing job.
A technical writing course is an added advantage as the course hones the writing and editing skills of writers through diverse technical writing assignments.
2. Skills
- As expected, technical writers must have excellent writing and communication skills. They must write, edit, update and publish technical information in a clear and concise manner that ordinary people can understand.
- These writers should be able to collaborate with different departments and subject matter experts to gather relevant information.
- They should have the ability to study technical processes relevant to the company and convey the information in a succinct way.
- They should be able to withstand stress and meet deadlines. A well-organised and motivated writer can work under pressure and manage time effectively.
- Technical writers must read a lot about technological terms and processes being used at their company. They should have good research skills to cover all aspects related to a process.
Having these skills prove your mettle as a technical writer and boost your chances of getting a higher salary.
3. Tools and Technical Knowledge
Proficiency in Adobe Framemaker, Robohelp, and knowledge of technical writing concepts such as DITA and MSTP ensure great opportunities for technical writers. The ability to use digital tools to create more effective content is correlated to above average salary.
Writers who can work only on Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office should start upgrading their computer skills to get into a higher pay bracket.
4. Experience
First-time technical writers with little experience usually start off with a salary of 1-2 LPA. After 2-3 years of experience, they can earn 4-5 LPA. A technical writer with 7-10 years of experience can earn anywhere between 12–15 LPA.
5. Recruiting Organisations
The top recruiters of technical writers include companies like Nutanix, HCL Technologies Ltd.,Capgemini, ZOHO Corporation, Oracle, Juniper Networks, etc. Their salaries range between 12-4 LPA depending on the experience, skills, and digital knowledge of the writers.
6. Geographic Location
Technical writer salary in India also depends on the geographic location of the writer. If you are working in cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, etc., you will get a higher salary than those working in companies based in Kolkata, Chennai, and Pune. The difference is due to the demand of qualified writers and the type of work required of them.
The future looks promising as the boom in the digital market would only add to the demand for technical writers in India.
“If you are beginning your career as a technical writer in a company, it would be beneficial to have some formal training. Joining a technical writing course would go a long way in establishing you as a qualified writer.”
