What are the differences between SAP S/4HANA and SAP ECC? Comparing SAP ECC ERP and SAP S/4HANA ERP

Let’s discuss the main differences between SAP S/4HANA ERP and SAP ECC ERP across different parameters.

One Source of Truth – The Universal Journal

The ACDOCA table combines the data structures of FI, AA, CO, CO-PA, and ML into one. There are many aggregate tables and index tables removed by using ACDOCA, or the Universal Journal. The data footprint is also significantly reduced because data needs to be inserted into only one table instead of multiple tables.

MATDOC – A New Inventory Management Line Item

In SAP S/4HANA, there is a new inventory management line item called MATDOC, which eliminates more than 26 tables that were previously present in SAP ECC. Material documents are stored in MATDOC rather than MKPF or MSEG.

HANA: A New and Innovative Database

You can run SAP ECC on third-party databases such as Oracle or IBM DB2. Although SAP S/4HANA runs on only SAP HANA’s database, S/4HANA is based on SAP HANA and its in-memory computing capabilities and offers capabilities in mind and provides multiple benefits.

 

• In-memory computing is enabled by HANA. By reading data directly from memory, the process is simplified. Even though write operations occur on the hard drive, data is always stored in the main memory RAM. Therefore, SAP S/4HANA HANA reads data greatly faster than traditional ERPs since its database is much faster than traditional ones.
• Because only affected columns are read in a query, SAP S/4HANA can access column-based tables faster.
• Because there are fewer distinct values than rows, SAP S/4HANA enables better compression.
• Due to its ability to process different columns asynchronously, SAP S/4HANA enables parallel processing.
• Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) are possible with SAP S/4HANA and SAP HANA. Predictive analytics and real-time reports are possible.
• Aggregates, indexes, and history tables will not exist in SAP S/4HANA. Due to the instantaneous creation of aggregates based on line item tables, aggregates are created dynamically.

FI & CO merge

Accounts in FI general ledger (GL) are mapped to cost elements in CO. The cost elements and the GL accounts of SAP S/4HANA are stored together in the ACDOCA field of the Universal Journal. FS00 creates and maintains primary and secondary cost elements with their related cost element categories as general ledger (GL) accounts. As a result of the changes in SAP S/4HANA, no reconciliation is necessary like in the case of CO to FI, so period end closings are now faster.

The New General Ledger

Because of the data structure, SAP S/4HANA’s new general ledger is technically the same as SAP ECC’s general ledger. However, customers using the classic general ledger will have to adopt the new general ledger and its Parallel Ledger Functionality.

Changes to CO Profitability Analysis (CO-PA)

CO-PA based on costs is now available as an option in SAP S/4HANA as opposed to SAP ECC’s Account-Based CO-PA. Additionally, SAP S/4HANA allows both options to be run simultaneously.

Changes to Custom Code

Using a special setting at the database interface level, read operations from custom code will be redirected to compatibility views so that custom code will not be interrupted. In other words, it will be invisible to the source code.

Partnering with a business is now mandatory

Extension of the material number

Material numbers in SAP ECC were 18 characters long. A character count of 40 is now available in SAP S/4HANA. However, this feature is optional. Prior to switching on the 40-character extension, it is important to evaluate its impact on custom code, interfaces, and other SAP applications.

Managing credit

For credit management, SAP ECC had FI-AR-CR. In SAP S/4HANA, credit management is handled by FSCM (Financial Supply Chain Management). In order to interface with external credit rating agencies, the credit management of FSCM (FSCM-CR) has a distributed architecture. There is a lot of manual work involved in the traditional FI-AR-CR credit control setting.

 

FSCM-CR eliminates this effort in SAP S/4HANA by utilizing advanced features, such as

Innovations at ATP

SAP ECC offers the option to check availability at the individual requirement level or at grouped requirements aggregated on a daily or weekly basis. Due to SAP S/4HANA’s simplified data model, only individual requirements can be checked for availability as there is no VBBS table in SAP S/4HANA.

SD pricing

Pricing and conditioning models have changed. A table PRCD_Elements with extended fields replaces the existing table KONV. Other changes have also been made.

Materials Requirement Planning (MRP) in real-time

Batch jobs are only permitted to run during non-peak hours when SAP ECC is being used for material requirement planning. Due to SAP S/4HANA, batch jobs are no longer needed because MRP can be executed in real time. SAP S/4HANA has also simplified MRP with subcontracting.

 

Plant and MRP areas are the only levels at which MRP can be executed. It cannot be executed on the storage level. MRP can be excluded or planned separately at the storage locations in SAP ECC. For scenarios at the storage location level, SAP usually recommends using both the MRP area and MRP type.
