Visa and Citizenship 

The visa regulations depends on the country you live in. The students applying visa to study in Germany needs visa or not depends on the three groups mentioned below.

1. EU member states – Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Switzerland 

Citizens of EU member states do not need a visa. Students can come to the country only with their national IDs and do not have to go through the visa application process before entering the country. The citizens of EU states only have to register their address with the Registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt) after entering Germany. 

2. Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the USA, the UK, Andorra, Brazil, El Salvador, Honduras, Monaco, and San Marino-

Citizens belonging to Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the USA, the UK, Andorra, Brazil, El Salvador, Honduras, Monaco, and San Marino do not need a visa. The students entering Germany do not have to apply for a visa application before the move. Students belonging to these states only have to register their address with the Resident Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt). Additionally, apply for a residence permit within 90 days after arrival in Germany. 

3. The other countries 

Citizens belonging to other countries will need Visa to move to Germany. After entering Germany, you will need to register your address in the Resident Registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt) and apply for a residence permit. 

Note: Hence, if you belong to the first category, you do not visa. The same applies to the second category with an exception of applying for a residence permit after arriving in Germany. As for the third category of citizens, you will need a student visa. 

German Student Visa 

German Student Visa is the type of visa students apply for study in Germany. It is required for students who have applied to a program at a German university and have received a letter of admission known as a letter of acceptance for the program. 

Additionally, The student visa that applies to you as a German Student Visa is offered by various higher institutions in Germany such as Universities, Universities of Applied Sciences, and Academics of Arts, Music, and Film. 

German Student Visa- Procedure 

The procedure for applying for a German Student Visa varies from country to country. But, below mentioned are the seven basic steps to apply for a German student visa:

1. Contact the German Embassy/Consulate in charge of your student visa: You can contact the German embassy near you which is usually highly recommended. 

2. Visit German Embassy/Consulate website 

a) Click on the National Visa/ Long Term Visa section

b) Click on a student visa (browse through the details of all the categories under it)

3. Apply for a visa appointment 

4. Submit the required documents 

5. Pay the visa fee

6. Undergo the interview process

7. Wait to receive the response (approval/rejection)

The popularity of German education is rising among International students, particularly after the country eradicated the tuition fees for higher education. Besides, the language barriers are coming down. Over 1,300 Masters in Germany are imparted in English. These courses are specially planned for international students. 

Different Types of Visa 

There are three types of Visas-

Student Visa  

If you have applied for any study program with a German university, you will need a student visa. Although whether a student requires a student visa or not depends on the countries they belong to (as mentioned above). A student visa is applicable for three months. After completion of three months of stay in Germany, a student will have to apply for a resident permit to continue studies. 

Language Course Visa 

Candidates coming to Germany to take German language courses needs Language Course Visa. Language Course Visa is valid for 1 year.

1) Visit the German embassy or consulate of your country and apply for a visa. 

2) Verify the available dates on the website of the German embassy of your country and fix an appointment for the visa interview. 

3) It is advisable to apply for Student German Visa three months after your arrival. The processing of your visa can take 25 days. 

4) After you deposit the required documents, they will be sent to the Immigration office at the University for approval. The documents will then be returned to the embassy or consulate in your country.

Side notes 

1After you complete your studies, you can apply for a residence permit for three years. Meanwhile, you can find employment in your field of study. 

2. Furthermore, you will get a health insurance visa and study the German language. It is highly recommended that students learn German before arriving in the country. This will help to interact with the non-English speaking population which is spread in all parts of Germany. 

Language proficiency requirement to study in Germany

If you are interested in applying for a long-term visa, you must have an A1 level of proficiency in the German language.

Furthermore, to achieve this, you will have to show results in the following test-

a) A1 certification (Goethe Institute) 

b) KSCE certification from KNEC

c) TestDAF 

Additionally, this applies also to the courses taught in English. The visa interview at the German Embassy will even discuss in Germany. So you need to prove that you can understand and communicate in basic conversational German. 

Documents required for German Student Visa 

1) To apply for a German university, you must have one of the visas mentioned above.

2) Certificate of Health Insurance Coverage

3) Financial proof to support your studies (around 10,236 EUR per year).

4) Certificates of past educational background, qualifications, and achievements. 

5) If you are applying for a course taught in German, you must prove basic German speaking competency.

6) Filled- in application form

7) Prove of application fee (around 60 EUR) 

8) Two photographs

9) Letter of admission from the university 

10) Statement of proof of authenticity of all documents

Moreover, The documents also depend on nationality and the type of visa you apply for. 

Rules for Work Permits in Germany 

EU and EEA students are allowed to work for 120 full days or 240 half days for a year which is 20 hours per week. 

Furthermore, if you want to exceed the period you can apply for “Agentur fur Arbeit”, which is the Federal Employment Agency and foreigners’ authority. 

Conditions for Residence Permit 

A resident permit is necessary to arrive in Germany. Whether you need a residence permit depends on which place you belong to. 

As mentioned above, citizens of the EU/EEA and Switzerland, Norway, Ireland, and Liechtenstein do not require a resident permit. Additionally, Citizens from other countries who have plans to study for more than 90 days must apply for a residence permit. 

The following documents are necessary to apply for Residence Permit-

1. Statement of registration from the Registration office.

2. Statement of health insurance coverage.

3. Student ID

Processing time German Student Visa 

This type of visa usually takes 25 days of processing. Furthermore, the processing time depends on the German Embassy and the country you are applying from. Sometimes it takes 6-12 weeks with the longest time of 3 months

When to apply for Visa 

It is highly recommended to apply for a visa before 3 months. 

Who should apply for Long term student visa 

1) Candidates applying for a Master’s, bachelor, or Ph.D. program should apply for a long-term visa because these courses take a long time. 

2) Candidates applying for German Language Course. This visa lasts up to one year or more than 90 days. 

3) Candidates applying for academic research. 

4) If the candidate is applying for training or Apprenticeship, the visa lasts up to 6 months. 

5) International Exchange Students must also apply for a long-term visa. This visa lasts for 1-5 years.
